Palaver is a new independent publisher dedicated to fearless, innovative, and creative modes of intellectual enquiry and writing. We seek to support the values of rigour, quality, and critical analysis in support of the free exchange of ideas.
Our organization has come into existence in response to a widely perceived sense that academic publishing today has been compromised by the development of global monopolies and the penetration of corporatist and managerialist values into both universities and the industry itself. These tendencies have eroded the independence of much academic publishing and have shifted the focus of editorial decision-making to commercial objectives.
While ensuring that scholarly standards are fully maintained, Palaver encourages research and writing that reflect in critical and original ways on accepted assumptions, take risks, and seek to break new ground. We are interested in projects that cross disciplinary boundaries and facilitate dialogues between cultures, theoretical frameworks, and social, religious, and political perspectives.
As with many other independent publishers, the advent of Palaver has been made possible by the technological changes of the last two decades, including the development of the Internet and eBook and print-on-demand platforms and the proliferation of social media. We believe that authors should receive fair payment for their work and that, where possible, publishers should be prepared to support unpopular and controversial projects.
Palaver aspires to retain its independence from external funders. We seek to develop an approach that incorporates open access and a fair and flexible pricing model that avoids exploitation of authors and readers. In order to enhance the viability of projects, increase the number of works that can be published, and maximize returns to authors, we often favour a “hybrid,” shared funding model that establishes respectful partnerships between the press and its authors. In cases where an open access model is not chosen, we are committed to keeping book prices as low as possible in order to make authors’ materials available to the widest possible readerships.
We are oriented towards scholars engaged in both empirical and conceptual research, reflective practitioners, and postgraduate students, although we are also hopeful of appealing to a wider public. We are assembling an advisory board to help us develop policies that will ensure democratic processes of operation, ethical practices, and socially responsible contributions.
Submissions and expressions of interest
Palaver invites initial expressions of interest (500 to 1,000 or so words), which may be sent to Leigh E. Rich, editor in chief, outlining the project in general. If we find the basic ideas attractive, we will ask for a more detailed proposal, which will then be sent out for review by people with expertise in the project’s subject area. Completed manuscripts will be reviewed by several experts in the field, who will decide whether to recommend publication, what revisions or changes are required, etc.
We are keen to hear from individuals and organizations who might have ideas for books or series. We welcome formal proposals for short and mid-length monographs (30,000–60,000 words), short books, pamphlets, or other innovative projects. We are keen to see proposals that would ordinarily not be considered by traditional academic publishers, either because of their innovative character or because of their seeming lack of commercial potential.
